Sharing your story
Sharing your story
đŹ How do you talk to your GP about hormones?
Worried about raising the topic of hormones with your doctor, especially if theyâre male? Youâre not alone. But remember: gender doesnât determine compassion or knowledge. Some of the most supportive, hormone-aware doctors I know are men. And yes, some women still donât believe in perimenopause! (I know!)
Most doctors genuinely want the best for you. The truth is, when youâre well managed, on the right treatment, feeling better, and having fewer symptoms, youâll see them less often and enjoy better long-term health.
That said, many doctors are cautious. Theyâre under pressure not to miss anything, and MHT hasn't always been presented clearly in past guidelines.
Get ready to share your story
The best approach is to go in ready to share your story. You might say:
âIâve been reading about menopause hormone therapy. I think I might benefit. Hereâs whyâŚâ
This isnât demanding, itâs inviting a conversation. It shows what matters to you and how they can help.
Itâs also okay to say:
âI really appreciate that you care about my whole health. But is it possible to consider hormone therapy alongside my blood pressure/insomnia/night sweats?â
You deserve a conversation built on respect, curiosity, and care. For many people in perimenopause, the benefits of MHT may outweigh the risks. So perhaps it's worth a try?
This lesson will give you tools and resources to help you get the support you need as soon as possible. (Though remember, slow and steady wins the race and increasing MHT too quickly can worsen side effects.)
